The University of Cambridge Masters in Clinical Medicine (Intensive Care)
The Masters in Clinical Medicine (Intensive Care) Programme combines a Masters level degree from Cambridge University and a vocational certificate from Cambridge University Health Partners (CUHP), the Academic Health Sciences Centre, to develop an unique and innovative programme which provides comprehensive training for tertiary centre consultants. This course has been designed to integrate advanced clinical training, non-clinical training, and a prestigious but demanding postgraduate qualification.
Who is the course aimed at?
The course is primarily aimed at UK and overseas peri-consultant intensivists. For example UK trainees who currently go overseas to do ICM fellowships at the end of their training or overseas trainees who come to the UK from other countries but often get little to show for it other than clinical experience. In the context of the current UK training scheme we have aimed the course at trainees who currently work at ST6/7 level or overseas trainees with around 7 years of postgraduate experience. This course is not meant to replace standard ICM training provided by the Medical Royal Colleges and overseas equivalents. It is designed to enhance and supplement that training to produce world leading tertiary centre consultants.
Is the course for people who want to do research?
No. The purpose of the program is to provide an integrated period of advanced ICM training and experience, which includes clinical ICM, research, quality improvement, and education, all of which are equally important in the development of a tertiary centre consultant. This will be coupled to the opportunity to obtain enhanced training in a sub-specialty area of ICM. All of the sub-specialty training options include a twelve month research dissertation which can be used to undertake traditional empirical research, a service improvement project, an innovative education programme, or another endeavour which is considered essential for the individual to develop as a leading tertiary centre consultant.
Aside from the clinical experience what does the student gain?
